Prof. Rajni Abbi becomes Director of DU South Campus

The 1276th meeting of the University of Delhi Executive Council (EC) was held on Saturday, July 12, 2025 under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh. At the beginning of the meeting, tribute was paid to former Pro Vice Chancellor and former Acting Vice Chancellor of DU, Professor PC Joshi. During the meeting, VC Prof. Yogesh Singh said that University of Delhi is fully ready for the 4th year of Under Graduate (UG) as per NEP-2020. Prof. Singh said that all kinds of modern facilities are being provided in the university for the convenience of the students. The EC approved the appointment of Prof. Rajni Abbi as the Director of the South Campus of DU. The Vice Chancellor placed a proposal to this effect before the EC which was passed unanimously.
The Vice Chancellor said that Wi-Fi Connectivity and Expansion has been expanded in the university at a cost of Rs 65.71 crore. The university library has gone online. More than two lakh online books and journals are available to the students and it is operational 24 X 7. University of Delhi is fully prepared for the 4th year of UG under NEP-2020. About 60% of the students are likely to upgrade to the 4th year. Prof. Yogesh Singh said that solutions are being found for the colleges which have any problem. In the colleges which have shortage of faculty, provision will be made for keeping some guest faculty as well as regular teachers from the same college or from other colleges to take additional classes. Along with this, he said that only regular faculty will teach the 4th year students while guest faculty will teach only junior classes. Clarifying about the payment for overtime, the Vice Chancellor said that provision will be made for proper payment for teachers as well as non-teaching staff. To promote entrepreneurship among students, the Vice Chancellor through the Executive Council called upon all the college principals to establish one incubator in each college and also establish a Section-8 company.
At the beginning of the meeting, Registrar Dr. Vikas Gupta presented the minutes and action taken report of the 1275th meeting of the Executive Council held on 23 May 2025. On this occasion, the curriculum of various departments / programs was also approved by the EC. After considering the recommendations made in the meeting of the DU Academic Council held on 05 July, the curriculum of various departments / programs was also approved by the EC. The recommendations made in the meeting of the University of Delhi Finance Committee held on 24 June 2025 were considered and approved. The annual accounts of the university for the financial year 2024-25 were also approved by the EC.
Construction work of 17 projects is in progress at an estimated cost of Rs 1912.15 crore
Giving information about the infrastructural improvement and expansion in the university, the Vice Chancellor said that the construction work of 17 projects is in progress at an estimated cost of Rs 1912.15 crore, for which funds of Rs 329 crore have been released. The construction of the WUS Health Centre building being built in the North Campus is 53.20% complete. The construction work of STP for the Faculty of Technology building in the North Campus is 45% complete. The horizontal expansion work of the Social Centre School Building in Maurice Nagar is 64% complete. The construction of the new Computer Centre building being built in the North Campus is 55% complete. The vertical expansion of the building of the multi-storey science block in the North Campus is 100% complete. 40 repair and renovation projects have been completed in the university at a cost of Rs 13 crore, 34 lakh, 48 thousand, 645.
Cultural Activity Centre to be built near Shankar Lal Hall
A Cultural Activity Centre will be constructed near Shankar Lal Hall of the University of Delhi. Various facilities will be built in it for cultural activities. This decision of the Building Committee has been approved by the EC. The above work has been handed over to CPWD. CPWD has submitted the concept drawing for the construction of the Cultural Activity Centre. CPWD has been directed to prepare the building plan while ensuring that there is no damage to the trees. The proposal has been approved in principle.
Construction of hostel for girl students and working women in Dhaka campus
Hostel for girl students and working women will be constructed in DU's Dhaka campus. For this, the recommendations of the Building Committee have been approved. It has been decided to assign the above work of construction of a hostel for girl students and working women in Dhaka campus to CPWD with B1+G+9 to prepare conceptual drawing and estimated amount of Rs 200.00 crore on the basis of PAR. CPWD has been advised to prepare the building plan in such a way that no tree is harmed.
New academic building will be constructed in the parking area of SP Jain, FMS in DU's South Campus
The Building Committee has approved the proposal and concept drawing for construction of a new academic building in the parking area of SP Jain, FMS in DU's South Campus. It has been approved by the EC. For this, an estimated amount of Rs 24.60 crore was also approved on the basis of PAR. CPWD has been directed to prepare the building plan while ensuring that there is no damage to the trees. Along with this, the proposal for construction of an executive hostel/guest house in South Campus and its conceptual drawing was also approved. For this, an estimated amount of Rs 12.41 crore was also approved on the basis of PAR. The proposal for construction of a new hostel building in South Campus and its conceptual drawing was also approved and an estimated amount of Rs 17.96 crore was also approved on the basis of PAR. While approving the proposal for expansion (vertical and horizontal) of the existing girl hostel Geetanjali in South Campus and its conceptual drawing, an estimated amount of Rs 11.23 crore was also approved on the basis of PAR. The proposal for vertical extension of existing Boys Hostels at Sarmati and Aravali in South Campus and its conceptual drawings have also been approved.
The Building Committee approved the proposal and conceptual drawings for construction of Residential Complex (Type IV/V) with Stilt Parking at P-53 South Extension and submitted it to the EC which was approved on PARA basis with an estimated cost of Rs. 5.00 crore. The Building Committee also submitted the details of the work in progress according to which the work of sound reinforcement system was to be done in the Convention Hall, Tagore Hall and Sir Shankar Lal Hall of Delhi University, out of which the work in Sir Shankar Lal Hall and Tagore Hall has been completed while the work in Convention Hall is expected to be completed by 12th August 2025. The work of redevelopment and reconstruction (electrical work, air conditioning work) of the existing building adjoining Vice Regal Lodge of University of Delhi is also to be completed by 31st August 2025.
Structural Audit of University Buildings/Hostels at Dhaka Campus
The DU Engineering Department was receiving frequent complaints of falling plaster and concrete pieces from ceilings, columns and beams etc. of Dhaka Girls Hostel buildings. Hence, the Engineering Department has assigned the task of structural audit of all the buildings of Dhaka Campus to CPWD. The reasons for the decay of these buildings are use of saline water, low concrete cover etc. The report also suggested measures for reconstruction, dismantling and rebuilding of some of the buildings which cannot be structurally repaired/reconstructed. The Building Committee has constituted a sub-committee to monitor the renovation/reconstruction works of Rajiv Gandhi Girls Hostel, Under Graduate Hostel Girls Hostel and 70 Nos. of Type-I flats buildings in Dhaka Campus. The retrofitting work will be done in a phased manner.
Solar plants will be set up on RESCO model in North and South Campus
The Building Committee has approved the proposal to assign the task of setting up solar plants on Renewable Energy Service Company Model (RESCO) in North Campus and South Campus of University of Delhi to SECI (PSU) under the Ministry of Renewable Energy. This proposal was also approved by the DU EC. The terms and conditions of the MoU for this will be as per the rules of the university.
Proposal invited to establish Dr. BR Ambedkar Udyan in Faculty of Social Science
On the matter of establishing a Udyan (garden) in the name of Dr. BR Ambedkar in the Faculty of Social Sciences and naming the auditorium as BR Ambedkar Auditorium, the Vice Chancellor asked the Dean of Faculty of Social Science, Prof. Sanjay Roy to submit a proposal. On the idea of starting a scholarship in sports on the name of DU alumnus and former Union Minister Late Arun Jaitley by an EC member, the Vice Chancellor constituted a committee headed by the Director of South Campus Prof. Rajni Abbi with EC members Aman Kumar, Raj Pal and Dr. Sunil Sharma, which will discuss with Arun Jaitley's family for this scholarship.
DU's performance in QS rankings is excellent: VC
Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh, while recounting the achievements of DU before the EC, said that DU's performance in the QS World University Rankings 2026 has been excellent. He said that in Employment Outcome, DU has climbed 14 places compared to last year and reached 30th position in the world. With this, DU ranks first in this category among Indian institutions, while overall it is at 7th position. DU's rank in the global ranking has been 328. The Vice Chancellor said that our teachers, students and scientists are working hard. This hard work is visible in this ranking.
